List of major events enters into force
On 4 December, following a year-long vacatio legis, the regulations contained in the “KRRiT regulation on the list of major events” come into effect. A few days earlier, on 24 November, the National Broadcasting Council adopted its “Standpoint on procedure concerning broadcasting of major events on channels other than national channels available free of charge”.
Last year’s regulation expands the list of major events enumerated in Article 20b section 2 of the Broadcasting Act to include Polish national team matches in World and European Championships in women’s and men’s volleyball, including elimination matches, FIVB Volleyball World League competitions played in Poland, semi-finals and finals of World and European Championships in men’s handball, and other matches being part of these events in which the Polish national team participates, including elimination matches, the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup, the FIS Women’s Cross-Country World Cup, and the World Championships in Athletics.
In accordance with the regulations of the Broadcasting Act, direct television transmission of major events may be broadcast, as a rule, only on national channels available fully free of charge. Transmissions of events defined in the regulation and Broadcasting Act, and consequently broadcasting law, are legally protected within the territory of all European Union states.
At the meeting of 24 November of this year, the National Broadcasting Council adopted a standpoint describing in detail the administrative procedure to be followed in the case of transmissionsof major events broadcast on a channel other than a national channel available free of charge.
